Composite Bonding

Composite Bonding is a  Dental Cosmetic technique that can be used to change the shape and look of a tooth in a single visit.  By applying a moldable acrylic resin (composite) that has the correct amount of color to match the tooth or surrounding teeth, a new looking tooth can be created. The resin is hardened by using a special curing light that activates the composite to harden and set. The resin is applied in thing layers until the desired shape and look is achieved. The tooth is then polished.

What is it used for?

Bonding is used for a variety of cosmetic dental procedures, including:

  • Filling dental cavities - "white fillings"
  • Replacing metal or amalgam fillings
  • Repairing broken and chipped teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Reshaping teeth
  • Smile makeovers - composite veneers (although porcelain veneers are the better option for this)

Why choose Composite Bonding?

Unlike veneers or crowns, composite bonding removes little, if any, of the original tooth.

  • It is a quick process, which typically lasts less than one hour.
  • It does not reduce the tooth’s original structure and is relatively inexpensive.
  • Composite resins come in many different shades and provide better matching of shades to the natural color of your teeth.

What are the disadvantages of Composite Bonding?

  • Composite bonds are not as durable and long-lasting as veneers,  crowns and overlays and may need to be re-touched or replaced in the future.
  • Composite bonds stain more easily and therefore require proper care and regular cleaning. In order to ensure the longest possible duration of the bonding, composites should be brushed and flossed daily. Common staining elements include coffee, tea, tobacco, foods and candy.
